The Audran Sequence (3-in-1)

In the 23rd century, when plug-in personality modules are as easy to obtain as gender reassignment, pleasures are cheap and death is easy. Marîd Audran has kept his independence the hard way, selling his detection skills in the slums of the Budayeen. By his standards, it’s a comfortable life. But his hard-won freedom is about to be bought…

When Gravity Fails: Friedlander Bey, the 200-year-old godfather of Budayeen’s underworld, enlists Marîd to be his hand of vengeance. But Marîd must first be wired with state-of-the-art “moddies” before he dares confront a killer with the power of every psychopath in history.

A Fire in the Sun: A savage killer is loose in the city, targeting children, prostitutes and even Marîd’s partner. Signs point to Abu Adil—the one man whose influence rivals Friedlander Bey’s.

The Exile Kiss: Marîd is starting to enjoy his newfound privilege, when he and Bey are betrayed and accused of murder. Abandoned in the Arabian desert, they must somehow survive the searing sands…to get their revenge.

A cyberpunk classic on a par with Neuromancer, George Alec Effinger’s three-volume Audran Sequence is fiercely sardonic, unflinchingly gritty…and impossible to put down.

As someone who normally steers away from sci-fi, I found these books very rewarding. They're pretty much gum-shoe detective stories placed in an exotic, distant future. The protagonist is well-developed and interesting. The books are fairly quick reads. I will be seeking out the short stories in Budayeen Nights

An Acquired Taste
April 27, 2009

Although this is definitely not an immediately reader- friendly series, the patient reader will be well rewarded by a complex, layered protagonist with interesting storylines. By series end, I was wishing their was one more story.

Author was obsessed.
January 22, 2009

While the idea for the story was good, I didn't like a lot of the content. It seemed to me that the author obsessed about everyones sexual orientation. it seems that every character had undergone a sex change operation, was a "Deb" (Transvestite) or other and the author went into detail about EVERY character as to whether they were one of the above or not.
