Phoenix Rising

Dark days have struck Victoria’s England, as Londoners vanish, then wash up on the banks of the Thames as bloodless, boneless corpses. Yet the Crown’s top-secret Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences will not allow its agents to investigate. However, the fearless and exceedingly lovely Eliza Braun—with her bulletproof corset and a disturbing fondness for dynamite—refuses to be deterred, and she’s prepared to drag her brainy but timorous new partner, Wellington Books, into the fray.

Phoenix Rising by podcasters Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris takes us deep into London’s shadows, as a malevolent brotherhood plots to enslave all Britons. Books and Braun must get to the twisted roots of their nefarious plot—or see England fall to the Phoenix!

lots of action, no originality
April 17, 2012

Aside from a clunky first chapter, the novel is very readable, but the characters are so cookie-cutter that you are never surprised. Also the authors tend to substitute a new skill or gadget for characterization. I never got attached to either or the leads, and the minor characters were even less interesting. Also the authors seemed to mistake violent misogyny with Victorian mores, and though women were not treated fairly by any modern standard, the two are not the same. They made their lead female character promiscuous to an alarming degree, and I'm not sure if this was intended as a comic foil, or simply because the authors mistake free thinking with 1960's free love. I don't think I'll bother with the sequel, unless there is obvious improvement on page one.

A Fun Read
April 12, 2012

I went into this expecting something filled with action sequences, derring-do,dark and mysterious goings-on, and characters who can handle it all with a serious attitude while keeping tongue in cheek. And that's just what I got. This book did not disappoint. I am looking forward to Janus Affair. Recommend.

Very entertaining
December 14, 2011

Hope there will be more of Books and Braun, what a great duo. The plot moves quickly with enough depth to keep you immersed, but not so much that you get 'brain strain'. Hope they will have cause ti investigate some of those other references to past cases.

Avengers with fun
November 13, 2011

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, no special moral messages, no philosphoical conundrums, just rollicking good entertainment. Greatly recommended.

Poorly Written, Would Not Recommend
November 06, 2011

I have to agree with the comment about the bad editing, there were so many errors in this book. It reads like more like fan fiction than anything that should have been published, I definitely would not recommend it. As a matter of fact, I wish I could return it, but I guess I will take it to Half Price Books to see if I can get anything for it.
