On a mission for Beta Colony, Cmdr. Cordelia Naismith is thrust into a trial by fire when aggressors from Barrayar level her base. Captured by the infamous Vorkosigan, she has no hope of survival. But Vorkosigan is a brave and honorable man—an old-style aristocrat with treacherous enemies. Forced to make peace with him, Cordelia will become an outcast on her own planet...and the Lady Vorkosigan on his.
On Barrayar, Cordelia is ready to settle down...until the Emperor dies, and Aral becomes guardian of the infant heir to the throne. Soon, he's the target of assassins who fight with bio-war technology in a dynastic civil war. And neither Aral nor Cordelia guess the part their cell-damaged unborn will play in Barrayar's bloody history.

Enemies have to join sides to save themselves and everything dear to them. This is a book full of adventure, love, politics, war, relationships, and wonderful characters. The writing style is easy to read, enjoyable and clever. I just read this one again. My 6th time, yet I still had to stay up all night to finish. I love it. Cordelia is my favorite character not just in science fiction but in all fiction. I love seeing how she thinks and what she does. That is why I’ve read these books so many times. She is strong and smart and empathetic and feminine and resourceful. I can relate to her and want to be her.
The book is a compilation of two books: Shards of Honor and Barrayar. But the stories fit together smoothly with the same characters in each and the second book taking place right after the first one.

This is another book in the group about Miles Vorkosigan (although he isn't born yet in this one), but the whole series is terrific, and this is no less. Well written, great plot, good characters... what more could you ask? This series is so good, that I have started buying books in the author's other series' as well. Haven't read them yet, but this series is so good that I have high hopes.

This is a very interesting author. Different than most SF writers in that the central aspect of the book is truely the characters, not the technology or the world. I enjoyed these two stories, enough to buy the rest of the series. I am looking forward to reading them.

Miles would not be Miles without Cordelia. Behind every great man, indeed... If you've read the Miles series and wondered at the references to his mother and the frequent flinches by strong men, you have to read these books to understand. It also explains the devotion of certain people to her. Read the books-both of them- you can't put them down, and you'll love them.

Let me say that normally this book would receive a five star review. However I have to compare it to the rest of the series that it begins, so I can only give it 4.5. I am not a huge space opera reader but Bujold's writing transcends setting. She creates in her stories characters you care about, in situations that hold your attention. Good guys do bad things and bad guys can be heroes, just like real life. Showing the slow growth of the characters, the internal conflicts is one of Bujold's strengths. Nothing in her worlds is ever as it seems in very interesting and thought provoking ways. These books look beyond the military, scientific exploration of space to how a cultural clash can cause a cultural re-examination by the survivors. Beginning the long running Vorkosigan series for Bujold these books introduce the reader to the worlds before the most charismatic of characters was introduced.
