A Rising Thunder

The war between the People’s Republic of Haven and the Star Kingdom is finally won and peace established. But a brutal attack on the Manticoran home system alerts Honor Harrington and the navy she serves to a grave new danger: a plan to enslave the entire human species! Behind that plan lies a technologically powerful, utterly nefarious enemy—the shadowy organization known as the Mesan Alignment. As if that weren’t peril enough, Honor must also face down a centuries-old nemesis in the Solarian League.

Honor’s top priority is to defend against another Mesan strike—one that may spell Manticore’s doom in a singe blow. It’s time to shut down and secure the wormhole network that is the source of the Star Kingdom’s wealth and power...but also its greatest vulnerability. Yet this is an act that the Earth-based Solarian League inevitably will take as a declaration of war.

In David Weber’s action-packed A Rising Thunder, the Solarian League directs its massive power against Manticore. And once again, Honor Harrington is thrust into a desperate battle that she must win if she is to take the fight to the real enemy of galactic freedom—the insidious puppetmasters who lurk behind the Mesan Alignment!

I Love these stories!
April 10, 2012

Another wonderful book about the world of Honor Harrington. David Weber never runs out of new ideas. Love the tree cats, love the kids, love the villains, love the battles (though I sometimes get a little overwhelmed by the details), love the surprises...can't wait to read the next installment.

Set up
April 07, 2012

While I realize this book is a set up for future books, it was a complete disappointment. Honor doesn't show up until page 127 and is gone before the last 130 pages. For a Honor Harrington book, you shouldn't have your main character missing for two-thirds of the book. I sincerely hope the following books that have the Honor Harrington moniker attached to them have more Honor in them.

Shame on Publisher
March 30, 2012

This is not Mr Weber's best effort, but it may not be entirely his fault. One can see Mr. Weber has a much larger story arc in mind but I bet the publisher felt it was to large for one book and saw profits to be made to from a two or three book effort. So Mr Weber felt compelled to write filler. In addition I think Mr. Weber is reaching the end of his interest in the Honor Harrington character. I am not one who reads the blogs dissecting a writer's intent but I always thought he was building towards a glorious end for Honor. The universe he has built is very interesting and populated with a vast array of interesting folk it is a shame to see the affection for one player in that universe, even though it has been the central actor, lower the quality of narrative. Mr. Weber is stuck with problem what to do with Honor next.

Another of David Weber's excellent Honor Harrington novels with additional characters who develop very well. Wish his next book would come out tomorrow.

Good setup...
March 27, 2012

Like another reviewer noted, this book is clearly set up for the next one. There are all the favorite characters (and seeing Honor dealing with the Manticore political universe is really fascinating), but you a) need to have read some of the not-directly-about-Honor books to have a sense of the political universe, and b) really need to wait for the next book to see what's going to become of Manticore and the new Manticore/Peep alliance. There should be some serious action in the NEXT book, but we'll have to wait for it. Recommended (it's still a great story), but it's definitly more of a book to maintain continuity in the Honorverse than past book.
