I felt that the book missed something it did not grab my internal can't put it down feeling. Maybe it was the people he wrote about do think he is aiming for another one in the series. Very dissappointed about the cat Pickles thought he could have handled that better..Agreed with many of the other reveiwers, something missing from what have read and watched on tv about volcanos thought things would have been more destasters. I don't know if would buy a second book on this maybe just to find out if they catch the serial killer.

Mr Turtledoves work continues to go downhill. A cast of terrible characters, the worst police drama in history as a subplot and more time spent on the type of music one character plays than on the volcano. There is nothing to recommend here beyond the idea.

Wish I would of waited till someone had reviewed this first. A family of characters you could care less about caught, like the rest of the world in a massive volcanoes aftermath. And not much happens. I actually went back through the end of the book to see if I skipped a chapter or two. No such luck. If he writes a second part, and I don't care if it's awesome, I will not read it out of principle. Sorry Harry.

If you like Sci Fi channel original movies, and you know who you are, you will LOVE this book.

Turtledove has done his geological homework researching the super volcano beneath Yellowstone. He also has written a realistic, character driven story that shows something of what the world might look like in the aftermath of such an event. The story feels a little bit like it might be part 1 of a book series. Either that, or Turtledove was not interested in exploring the more long term effects of such a disaster. A Yellowstone super eruption could be a civilization crushing event, but Turtledove leads one to believe we might just be adaptable enough to survive.
