The Quantum Thief

Jean le Flambeur has been called a thief, a con artist, a mind-burglar and more. His origins are shrouded in mystery, but his exploits are known throughout the Heterarchy—from breaking into the vast Zeusbrains of the Inner System to stealing rare antiques from the Moving City of Mars.

But Jean made one mistake. Now, oddly diminished, he is condemned to play endless virtual games in the Dilemma Prison—against countless copies of himself. But his routine is upset when he is rescued by the mysterious Mieli and her spidership, Perhonen. Jean is taken to the Oubliette, where time is a currency, memories are treasures, and a moon-turned-singularity lights the night. Mieli offers him a chance to win back his freedom and the powers of his old self—in exchange for finishing the one heist he never quite managed.

The Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi is a breathtaking joyride through a future solar system rife with virtual vigilantes, public-key encryption, people who communicate via shared memory and hyperadvanced humans descended from an MMORPG guild. But for all its wonders, it is also a story powered by very human motives— betrayal, jealousy and revenge. It is a stunning debut not to be missed.

Definately worth the read

A very forward-thinking book, where time and memories are traded as easily as money. The story seems to run a little slowly in the beginning due to some slightly confusing period jargon, but one quicly picks up the speech as the tempo moves into gear. I can't wait to see if this book enters into any of the obvious sequels that the author has graciously left himself.
