Such a great read
April 01, 2012

A Princess of Mars remains my favorite. This is truly great storytelling, with all the classic elements in it: characters that feel like real friends, swashbukling, romance, some of the most evil villains around, and men and women with not just courage but with honor, pride, and integrity. You should not judge this series by the movie. I don't know what made them think they could transfer something like this to film to begin with. Not all books are meant to be made into over-inflated, big budget super hero movies.

The three that started the wonder of it all

I love, love, love this series. These are the classics that you can point to and say, 'they don't write them like that anymore'. There are other classic sf reads that I do enjoy, but these lead the pack. You absolutely must read this series if you are into sf/f. Now if only the club would get ALL of the Pellucidar books and Carson of Venus.

If you haven't, DO
February 25, 2010

I have read these books at least 4 times, twice as a teenager, once again in my 30's and again a few years ago. They are seminal, they are darn good fun. Sword and sorcery before Conan, tight plotting when he probably could have gotten away without it. I'm still looking for the door to the dimension wherein this is real and a way to get a few billion barrels of water to.... well, read and enjoy

Great, old-school science fiction
September 02, 2009

I had read several, but not all of the ERB Mars stories back in the '60's. Always meant to "finish" the series, but couldn't find all of the books in print. Recently, I got an iPhone 3GS and the excellent Stanza e-reader application. I was able to download the entire series to my phone and read them. I just finished 2 weeks ago. While that was great, I've always preferred having a book, especially hardcovers. I've been an SFBC member since 1972 and still have most of the books I've purchased. So, I'll most likely buy all of these new prints and keep them for the grandkids to read. As for the stories...if you haven't read the Barsoom novels, you're missing out. They hold up very well and are a joy.
