Outward Bound (3-in-1)

Have Spacesuit—Will Travel: Kip, a high school senior, wants to go to the Moon—badly. Now that he owns an obsolete space suit, he gets his chance...thanks to a race of highly advanced aliens who see humans as a source of protein.

Starship Troopers (Hugo winner): In a future where you either enlist in the military or forfeit full citizenship, 18-year-old Johnnie Rico survives the toughest boot camp in the Universe…to be sent into battle against mankind’s most terrifying enemy.

Podkayne of Mars: To further her goal of becoming the first female starship captain, Podkayne Fries travels to Earth with her Uncle Tom, unaware he’s the ambassador of an interplanetary conference—whose vote certain parties will stop at nothing to control.

I read Have space suit-will travel while I was in middle school...I loved the story then and I enjoyed it just as much when I re-read it recently. Starship Troopers was also a re-read and just as enjoyable. I am looking forward to reading the 3rd selection. This is an excellent selection .

Can't Beat This as a 3-in-1
January 20, 2013

If this was just "Starship Troopers," I would say you should buy the book. But you get two more, and they aren't just throw-ins. "Have Spacesuit -- Will Travel" might not be primo Heinlein, but it easily passes as high quality Science Fiction. Unlike other reviewers, I love it, despite some of its simplicity. "Podkayne of Mars" (which I personally might call the weakest of the three) is also very good. So you get a Hugo winner plus 2 more very good books by one of the masters of science fiction. Really, who's going to complain about that?!

I'm not sure who wrote the club review...

but they clearly didn't read the book. Starship Troopers (the novel, not those awful movies) is about *why* governments and people work, and if it doesn't make you think, you aren't paying attention. Have Spacesuit, Will Travel is probably the weakest of the three novels (it's also the earliest) and is a nice piece of storytelling, but not all that exciting. Podkayne is another social experiement/how things work story -- good female characters (don't let anyone tell you that Heinlein can't create good women characters -- here's one of the many). Recommended, if only for Starship Troopers alone. Great read.

These are all early works by Heinlein, they all great fun reading. As far as I'm concern his early works were his best.

Still loving R.A.H. after all these years
September 24, 2008

Outward Bound is a must have, I have recently introduced my nephew to R.A.H. I see in him the joy I felt reading Have Spacesuit-Will Travel for the first time some 40 odd years ago.
