Chaos Walking

The plague that wiped out all the female settlers on New World also made every thought audible. Privacy is very hard to come by, and unguarded thoughts are severely punished. So when Todd Hewitt—the only boy in a town of men—discovers a secret place without Noise, he’s forced to flee with only his dog, whose voice he can hear, too. Pursued by hostile men from Prentisstown, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature—a girl who will become their only companion on a white-knuckle flight to freedom. But will they find safe haven...or even greater danger?

Gritty and suspenseful, Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness—including The Knife of Never Letting Go and The Ask and the Answer—is an SF adventure you won’t be able to put down.

Powerful, maddening, amazing.
March 07, 2012

Absolutely amazing writing. If you can let yourself get immersed in the dialog, which is hard at first, so stick with it!, you will get rewarded with one of the most powerful reading experiences. Violent? Yes. Totally surprising at nearly every turn? Yes, yes. Maddening? YESSSS. But so, so worth it. Really one of the best things I've read this year.

A page turner BUT...
October 23, 2011

I had a hard time reading it also. The violence was some of the most extreme I've read in ages, and the language, so many four letters over and over, was irritating and seemed wholly unnecessary. Plus it was too much of a downer. But I felt I had to give it 3 stars because it was gripping and hard to put down. I'm almost afraid to read Monsters of Men though, I can't take any more of the depressing sort. This guy can obviously write, too bad he wouldn't do abook that didn't contain all the mentioned negatives.

Hard, but compelling
February 12, 2011

This difficult, but gripping novel kept me reading even through strange dialogue and confusing conversations...I was upset by the ending, which was completely unexpected...will the author write a conclusion to this book that won't leave me angry? I detest books that leave you hanging without resolving anything!
