Unseen Academicals

Bestselling author Terry Pratchett returns to the playing field with the 37th novel in his wildly popular Discworld series. In Unseen Academicals, he gives the term “fantasy league” an all-new meaning, as the wizards of Unseen University and favorite characters like Rincewind, Sam Vimes and Ponder Stibbons take to the astroturf for a bracing, manly game of “foot-the-ball.”

Due to a rider in an endowment to the University, this ungentlemanly sport, long unplayed on campus, must be reinstated, or the faculty will have to settle for a paltry three meals a day instead of the customary nine. Once the uproar dies, the wizards set out to form a team and schedule a game—not the rough and tumble sport of bullies, but a fast new football with rules—absolutely no magic!—uniforms, goalposts and a ball that goes gloing when you drop it.

The prospect of a Big Match draws together a street urchin with a talent for kicking cans; a maker of jolly good pies; a dim but beautiful young woman; and a self-effacing goblin who just wants to make his mark in the worldfour lives that are entangled and changed forever.

Though magic may be banned from the game, there’s still something magical in the air.…

Likeable new characters; good storyline
February 06, 2010

After the reading at the First North American Discworld convention in Tempe AZ over Labor Day, I was looking forward to the latest Discworld novel. The first couple of chapters were much rougher (harder to read) than usual: self-consciously clever, definitely in line for some editorial cuts. Once past that, though, when the focus turned to the new characters and their story, we found the familiar delights of Discworld. Loved the self-improving goblin, dwarf fashion designer, strong new women characters (surely Sir Terry has patents on some of these), and the brief glimpses of our familiar friends Rincewind, the Librarian, Ponder Stibbons, et al. Not the most stylistically adept of the Discworld books but still terrific characters and enjoyable story.

Once again Terry Pratchett does an awesome job with the residents of Disc World and all it's magical creatures. I always watch for his stories because of the entertainment value and humor throughout. Can't wait for his next installment.

The best
January 19, 2010

I think this is the best in the disc World series. I love the 'whistle' it brought back memories and I laughed till the tears were a rollin' down my cheeks. If you follow the scrums by fans a football games then this hits the mark dead on. As far as not "his usual style" I say phlaaaat to that.

I love Pratchett books but . . .
January 15, 2010

This one isn't his best. I enjoyed the characters, but the book didn't have me laughing out loud as most of his other works have done. There's something missing of his usual style. Even so, I'll look forward to future Pratchett novels

Another Great Pratchett

I was very pleased with the book even though I worried it wouldn't be to my style because I'm not a soccer fan. But Pratchett's humor made it entertaining and well worth the money.
