Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with the most talked about book of the year! And Another Thing is the sixth volume in Douglas Adams’ legendary “trilogy,” written by the fiendishly clever Eoin Colfer, author of the bestselling Artemis Fowl series. Adams’ first five novels traced the madcap adventures of earthling Arthur Dent and his alien sidekick, Ford Prefect, after Earth is destroyed to make way for a hyperspatial bypass. Joined by a cast of zany and lovable characters, they fight loathsome invaders, deal with killer robots...and search the universe for a really good cup of tea. We can’t tell you much about book six, but don’t panic—Adams’ widow, Jane Belson, feels Eoin Colfer is the perfect writer to continue her husband’s legacy. Having fallen in love with the series as a teen, Colfer was honored and thrilled when he was approached to pen book six. And he is “bloody determined that this will be the best thing I have ever written.” For more than 40 years, you’ve followed Arthur and all his friends from radio play to TV, comics, film, even iPhone applications. Now get ready for another screamingly wild ride through the galaxy with And Another Thing.

This is not Douglas Adams. If you go into this remembering this you get a great romp through the insanity of the universe(s) of Douglas Adams. The heart of Adams is represented, much of the feel of Adams is here, but there is also a lot of Colfer, who has a good grasp of the the perversity of the psyche of a teen aged girl. If you like Colfer's other work, and you can accept that someone other than the Master might be able to create within that structure, this is a pretty good rebuilding of the universe of Arthur Dent--which apparently reinvents itself regularly anyway.

I loved "The Hitch Hiker's Guide" by Douglas Adams. I kept buying the books, although by the fifth one Adams had thoroughly worn out the premise. He went on to write the Dirk Gently novels and then stopped writing fiction altogether.
"And Another Thing..." was written by Eoin Colfer as a continuation of the "Hitch Hiker's Guide" series. The problem is that the 4th and 5th books by Adams were mediocre, and there's not that much to gain by recycling the same old material.
Give this one a miss.

His bio says that Mr. Colfer has a smash hit with his Artemis Fowl series, stories about a 12 year old boy who solves crimes. He should probably stick with the juvie books. The plot was insipid, the "Guide excerpts" were banal, and I personally believe that Dave Barry could have done a better job. Some sequel authors cut the mustard (Brian Herbert has done a fanatstic job elaborating the Dune story, IMO). It appears to me that Mr. Colfer has cut something else.

Well, my previous review apparently got deleted. (Seems I crossed the line from sarcasm to verbal abuse.) In that case, I'll keep it simple; I'm sorry I bought this book. It's nothing like Adams' work, it has no originality, the romantic subplot makes no sense, the ending makes even less sense. I had to force myself to read it, thinking that it had to get better. It didn't. If you really want some Douglas Adams, find a copy of "The Salmon Of Doubt".

I don't know why I expect sequel authors to live up to the originals. Naivete, I suppose. And the hope that magnificent works will live on. To say that this book is a disappointment is a vast understatement, but that is what made Adams such a genius. Understatement of galactic proportions. This book misses the point by parsecs. It's not even a decent rehash of Adams' works. It should never have been written, much less published. My apologies, Mr Adams, for even considering that anyone could approach your genius. I will donate the money I wasted on this book to the Dent Family Foundation.
