After Paul Muad’Dib became Emperor, his mother, the Lady Jessica, turned her back on Dune and returned to her ancestral home on Caladan. Now, two years after the end of the Jihad, Jessica receives devastating news: Blind and heartbroken over the death of his beloved concubine, Paul has vanished into the desert and is presumed dead. With Gurney Halleck at her side, Jessica races to Dune to help her daughter, Alia, hold the reeling Empire together.
With Muad’Dib gone, conspirators and usurpers are converging on Dune from all directions. As the traitor Bronso of Ix continues to spread propaganda against House Atreides, the exiled Shaddam IV moves swiftly to try and snatch back his throne. And Jessica faces battles aplenty in the growing conflict with Paul’s increasingly tyrannical sister. The deadly winds of Dune are blowing again, and somehow Jessica must find a way to quell the looming storm...or everything Muad’Dib worked for will be lost.
Tying the loose ends between Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, the previously untold stories of Lady Jessica and Paul’s turbulent friendship with Bronso of Ix unfold in The Winds of Dune, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s most enthralling Dune novel yet.

I've been reading the "Dune" books since the '60's, when the series first began and I've even turned my now grown sons on to them. Frank Herbert's son, Brian, does not write with the same lush character and plot development as his father, but the recent books are still addictive, filling in details for those of us who have become addicted to the Dune Universe. The Winds of Dune continues in this tradition, giving us one after another of those "aha" moments, where we come to understand how all the characters are interrelated. A very enjoyable read.

Lots of people have slammed the books that Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson are writing in the Dune universe. Why? I have found that the books are very good. Brian Herbert has access to his fathers notes, and the great man probably had an idea of backstory, fill in gaps, last story. For those who love the Dune series, enjoy. For those who don't like what Messrs Herbert and Anderson are writing, I say lighten up and be thankful that Frank Herbert son is picking up where where he left off.

Like "Paul of Dune", "Winds of Dune" is another novel that helps fill in some of the gaps in the history from the original Dune series. I found this particular novel quite interesting as it focused primarily on Lady Jessica and most of the story was from her point of view. This installment in the series fills in the details that help make the history of Paul's empire make much more sense in the larger story arc of the whole series. It had never been clear until Paul of Dune and Winds of Dune why he allowed the jihad to happen, when in Dune he had been so fearful of that future coming to pass. These two novels help explain why those events unfolded as they did.
I only started reading the Dune series recently (I inherited the series from my mother and bought the newer ones myself) and found it has been worthy of its legendary status in the Sci-Fi world. I think that once again, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have done a fantastic job in enriching the world and future that Frank Herbert envisioned.

I have been reading and collecting the Dune Universe for over thirty years, and the foresight and work of Brian and Kevin in carrying on the tradition of Frank have continued to amaze me. I have never read a Dune book I didn't enjoy from cover to cover. The Winds of Dune is no exception. The history and back stories of the Dune characters is what always keeps me coming back for more. Now I'm just waiting for the next book...

I have been a fan of these books forever! Each time I read them I am mezmorized and cannot put them down! I think that Frank Herbert would be proud of how Brian has taken over and improved on what he started so many years ago!
