Dear SFBC Member,
I was trained as a historian and practiced as such for several years. But after a while the truthfulness of history began to compare unfavorably to the shining lies of my imagination. I decided that instead of doing research, I would make things up. So I became a fantasy writer. I still use historical nuggets: 18th century military culture, 19th century clothing, 16th century empires, and 21st century slang. But with these details I mix decidedly a-historic things such as blue tinted butlers, eagle-headed soldiers, female generals, sentient squids, and magick.
Thus: Flora Fyrdraaca, the adventures of Flora, her best friend, and her red dog. I like Flora-she's gutsy and silly, brave and reckless, fearless and obnoxious, loyal and passionate. And she likes a good snack. In short, she's as human as the rest of us. Even though the world in which she lives in is full of decidedly non-humans! (To say nothing of the red dog.)
Flora Fyrdraaca contains the first two books of Flora's schemes. A third book is currently in the works. No spoilers, but let's just say that as usual Flora manages to improve upon her troubles and continues to find new and dangerous ways to further her ambitions. But, being a girl of spirit, no matter how tough the going, Flora never gives up. And that is the thing that I like about her the most!
My stories have been described as "screwball comedy for goths", but I like to think of them as fantastical historicals or historical fantasticals, take your choice. After all, history is a type of fantasy. For all the primary source research, in the end, the past world the historian builds is as weird and remote from our own as Middle Earth or Narnia, yet oddly familiar. I hope you will find Flora's world to be all of that, too. And Flora's escapades entertaining and alarming.
Enjoy!
--Ysabeau Wilce
Ysabeau S. Wilce makes a sparkling novelistic debut with Flora Fyrdraaca—two tales with all the charm, magic and mayhem of the Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket books.
When you live in a House with 11,000 decaying rooms that shift at random, you have to possess a spirit of adventure. And at age 14, Flora Fyrdraaca is nothing if not adventurous. Aspiring to be a ranger like her hero, Nini Mo—“Rangers are clever, cunning and shrewd. Rangers seek out secret truths.”—Flora takes a forbidden shortcut in the House and stumbles upon a praterhuman being who binds her life with his. So begins a series of spirited adventures that will put Flora, her sidekick Udo, and all their rangery magick to the test. Includes Flora Segunda and Flora’s Dare.

Flora lives in a world that reminds me of Southern California, geologically, and climatically. There are also some cultural references to Spanish architecture and language from olden times. It is the first time I have read a fantasy that was set in such a familiar, yet still unknown, world. To tell the truth, Flora's culture reminded me of fantasies I have read that were in old Venetian society, just set in Santa Monica, or Santa Barbara. Besides that, I enjoyed the story and the characters. I am looking forward to more Flora books.

The first book was a bit slow and I think that was because the author was building the background of the story. Don't stop reading the first book because the second one moves fast and is really GREAT! It reminded me a lot of the Harry Potter books mixed with a bit of Spiderwick Chronicles and The Edge series. There were some really cute scenes and stories in the second book that made me snicker--I guess the first book just didn't catch my funnybone as much as the second. I do highly recommend reading these and I really want to read the third one.

Even though the book was listed as for children, I thoughly enjoyed it and I am 54! I could not stop reading it and can't wait for the next one to come out. I highly recommend it for people who enjoyed Harry Potter and other fantasy books.

It was fun reading this book, it is very different from most authors and I really enjoyed it.

There must be thousands, if not tens of thousands, of entries in the juvenile fantasy field, but Flora Segunda and its sequel Flora's Dare are not quite like anything else out there. Wilce has a truly fresh take on the young hero who must discover who she is and begin to fulfill her destiny. The world she lives in is a wonderful blend of the fantastic and the historically based, if not quite what it would be in our world. And with each chapter there is more to experience, surprise and amaze. Oh, and there is nothing cutesy or "precious" about the story. Better, as Flora wrestles with her problems, which include obtaining a magical education, saving Califa from earthquakes, herself from birdheaded beings and sundry other evils, rescuing her best friend from a pair of possessed boots and freeing a giant squid, we come to respect and admire her gumption and determination. Sometimes down but never out, Flora is an engaging character and it is a privilege to have had a chance to get to know her. Everyone should learn something about how to be a ranger!
