The Scourge of God

The world is passing into the hands of the Changelings, the children born after the event that rendered all technology inoperable. Spurred by dreams and visions that hint at forces beyond comprehension, Rudi Mackenzie and his friends make their way east across the land that was once the United States of America. Their destination: Nantucket, where the truth behind the Change may be found.

But their journey won’t be easy. Rudi must find new allies in the war against the Church Universal and Triumphant, whose Cutters destroy any technological remnants they come across—and those who dare use them. But one fanatical servant of the Church has an even greater mission: to stop Rudi from reaching Nantucket—by any means necessary.

Good but looooong

I just love SM Stirling. Dies the Fire was a truly wonderful book and the first 3 books made a very satisfying trilogy. Then with The Sunrise Lands Mr Stirling starts another trilogy a dozen years after the last one ends. There is some really good stuff in this trilogy but not as wonderful as the first one. This is a QUEST with our little band of heroes headed from Oregon for Nantucket. I was reading The Sunrise Lands and noticed that my husband had almost finished the Scourge of God. So I asked "Are you in Nantucket now?" He laughed and said "No, we're only in North Dakota!" We both laughed realizing we were getting jerked around for at least one more book. But that we were enjoying the ride. The war in the Scourge of God is not as riveting a war as the Protector's War was. I had real trouble with the Portland Protectors fighting beside the Bearkillers and the Mackenzies. And the war is not resolved well. And Stirling really drops the ball when our travelers enter a Mormon town invaded by the Cutters. What really happened to the women? Did the Mormon men join the attack? What happened to all the children? Each of these issues could have been resolved with a couple of sentences. Very unsatisfying. Really, Mr Stirling, this is sloppy writing. But then I totally enjoyed all the stuff with the Sioux. Excellent and satisfying. My husband and I have gotten so totally into The Change that we think about it and talk about it, boring our friends to tears. Will we be reading Sword of the Lady? Of course! Do I expect to be completely satisfied with it? No but I'll certainly enjoy a lot of it.

I am up to date in the series of books, I found The Scourge of God distracting and I felt it rambled to much. Mr. Stirling needs to finish the story plot so we the readers can get answers "if any" as to what caused the change. If this is to be a continuing series he needs to have more focus and not all the sub plots and story lines with the characters.

The first 10 chapters are available on Stirling's website. This is an excellent sequel to the previous book The Sunrise Lands. Although this book will make more sense to those who have read other novels in the series it should be enjoyable by others as well: they will almost certainly buy the whole bunch once they read one.
