The Gypsy Morph

With the Genesis of Shannara trilogy, “[b]estseller Brooks effortlessly connects the Tolkien-infused magic of his Shannara books…with the urban, post-apocalyptic world of his Word and Void series….” (Publishers Weekly) Now, with The Gypsy Morph, this bold and ambitious fused-universe trilogy comes to a spectacular end.

The world that we know has been destroyed, the last cities fallen, the ravaged landscape overrun with demons and monsters that had once been men. In the land of the former United States, a weary band of survivors—the Elves of Cintra, guardians of the powerful Elfstones, and a ragtag group of human children—flees northward toward a safe haven promised by the mystical King of the Silver River. To reach it, they must follow the legendary gypsy morph—a creature of wild magic in the form of a boy.

With two Knights of the Word as their only protection, the brave remnant faces demon attacks at every turn—worst of all, the Klee, a dark, malevolent, implacable monster sent to destroy the gypsy morph…and anything that stands in its way.

But the refugees can let no obstacle hinder their passage. At stake is the survival of both races, human and elf—and the beginning of a brave new world….

Decent addition the the Shannara series.

Not Mr. Brooks' best... Definitely worth reading, but everything seemed a bit too formulaic and predictable. One of my biggest gripes is the final battle between Hawk and Findo Gask. The demon was defeated way too easily. I mean, he'd managed to keep himself alive for hundreds of years, and then to be defeated THAT easily? Kinda disappointing. The way the author built up this character, you'd think he'd be really tough to kill. Yeah, not one of Terry Brooks' best novels, but a decent enough conclusion to the trilogy. Elfstones is still Brooks' #1 book in my opinion.

All around a good read.

The Gypsy Morph was another good read in the Brooks world. It was good to see Findo Gask, finally get what he deserves. It was also kinda fun to see how the elves reacted to the technology of the modern world. I also liked how Logan Tom rescued Kirisin using nothing but his wits. Now I would like to see Brooks write a series to develope the Four Lands and their races from the beginning.

Satisfying

I have read every novel Terry Brooks has written. This novel was a satisfying conclusion to The Genesis of Shannara series. It was nothing revolutionary. If you have read anything by Terry Brooks you have read The Gypsy Morph. That's not to say it's not worth reading. It's as good as anything else he has written. In my opinion Terry's novels are formulaic. I wish he would venture outside the formula and outside the universes that he has created. Throw in some short stories or some one off novels. If you liked his other novels you will like this.

What a great conclusion to the series. After the bittersweet ending of the Word & Void trilogy, it felt great to see this ending. It reminded me so much of the ending to LOTR.
