The Sky People

While Marc Vitrac was growing up in 1960s Louisiana, Earth was rocked by the news that other planets in the solar system were literally crawling with lifeforms—Venus and Mars in particular. And suddenly a new kind of power-grab was born as the US and Soviet Union sped off in a heated race for the second planet from the sun.

Now in 1988, 25-year-old Vitrac finds himself the latest player in that ongoing rivalry, assigned to Jamestown, the US-Commonwealth base near Venus' only established city. Not to be outdone, the Soviets man their own base some distance away, where relations between the old superpowers remain tepid at best—that is, until a Soviet shuttle crashes in uncharted terrain, its captain possibly the only survivor. Vitrac joins the search for the crew, reminded of how humans need to stick together on this hostile rock.

For this is no ordinary boomtown world—not when the wilderness features ravenous raptors, pterodactyls, sabertooths and other long-extinct earth predators, and the locals closely resemble Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons. In fact, the Jamestown scientists accompanying Vitrac are alarmed by the unlikely way Venus resembles prehistoric Earth. Something's terribly amiss in the Venusian evolutionary scale, an enigma that could threaten every human life, and even Earth itself. Their only hope? A young Cro-Magnon woman serving as acolyte to a mysterious presence hidden in a sacred tribal cave—a presence capable of arming Neanderthals…with AK-47s! Jacket art by Gregory Manchess. An incomplete tale
January 16, 2009

You would have to write another book just to fill in the gaps that are rife in this book. Too many things left completely unexplained. The biggest comes at the end where a valuable airship is lost and noone come to look for it? Especially when it crashes at a site where they were sent to look for a previous crash!!! There could have been a very good story here if it were only fleshed out. I give it a C+.

great book, but definitly stirling standards
April 15, 2008

have you read a book by Stirling that didn't end up involving an airship and/or swordplay? no. however, he doesn't mess around when telling a good story. i do wish he expanded this book more, perhaps the third book will tie them all together. he has created a whole new exciting world to explore, and i look forward to more.

Riveting reading
May 25, 2007

S.M. Stirling is a true artist when it comes to the 'what if'. I was a little disappointed with the ending because he left a gap of at least a year between the last two chapters. I can only hope there's another book coming with the adventures of Marc, Cynthia, Teesa and Blair on their journey back to Jamestown. On the other hand, maybe he ment for everyone to use their imaginations and fill in the blanks on their own.

interesting throwback to Burroughs
April 03, 2007

While the plot was fairly tight and the ideas somewhat interesting, I found the ending somewhat unsatisfying and too abrupt. A lot of build-up and tension in character development that does not pay-off in the end. I got the impression that the author left too many strings untied at the end, perhaps with a next book-in-a-series option in mind. This alternative history invokes Burroughs-like imagery, but is not meaty enough for more than one book. He should have fleshed this one out more.

So good that I read it twice!

Very descriptive and intricate plot and characters -- NOT a boring page-turner read in a few sittings. I hope that there is an encore in the works.
