For Harry Dresden—the only wizard listed in the Chicago phone book—when it rains, it pours. In fact, it pours toads—always a sign something bad is about to happen. But Harry takes such omens in stride, given that his rattletrap VW Bug needs constant upkeep, and his 30-pound guard-cat wants regular meals. But armed with Bob, a wisecracking skull full of occult lore, Harry takes on supernatural forces galore. For a fee. Never mind that they're usually out to get him first.
In Summer Knight, no sooner has Harry escaped the Red Court vampires—where he's managed to spark a war between vampires and wizards—when into his shabby office walks none other than Mab, luscious Faerie Queen of Winter. Her assignment? Find the killer of her crony, the Summer Knight, and clear her as a suspect. Not a problem. But first he has to survive his fellow wizards—and their zeal to hand him over to the Red Court to seal the peace.
In Death Masks, Harry is still stuck in Red Court crosshairs and finds himself challenged by Count Ortega to a duel guaranteeing the war's end—right on the dais of Chicago's most-watched talk show! What a shame Harry's magic blows up the studio's equipment, allowing him to escape. But not before another guest—Vatican antiquities expert Father Vincent—hires him to find a stolen Church artifact…and a lethal trophy in the hands of evil: the Shroud of Turin. The Dresden Files returns, as witty and as fast-paced as ever, in the next two books of the series: Summer Knight and Death Masks.
Jim Butcher is a master of mystery and keeps your nose to the page as he guides you through a handful of extremely busy days in Harry Dresden's career. As our protagonist investigates the death of one of the faerie knights, and later, the presence of zombies in Chicago's morgue, we begin to get new revelation about his past and the secrets his late mother kept from him. Meanwhile, Harry's love life crashes and burns and rises from the ashes, adding to the madness of his already mad life.
Butcher's description is detailed, but human, and doesn't weigh down the storyline. His humor is extraordinary. He has shown himself to be a master of all things Dresden.
This book is a must-read for all fantasy lovers--heck, for ANYONE.

I'm a big fan of the classic sword and sorcery genre, so I was a little sceptical when a friend recommended the Harry Dresden books. Now I'm hooked! Jim Butcher's takes a believable approach to blending sorcery, faerie's, vampires, and many of other classic supernatural themes into a modern day Chicago.

Harry Dresden must avoid a war between the Red Court vampires and the White Council, by a duel with the Red Court vampire warlord Ortega. And, he must find and return the stolen Shroud of Turin to his client, so he can pay his bills. And, he must deal with his feelings for his ex-girlfriend Susan, who has returned, but with a friend, Martin. And, he must survive the Denarians, demons from the Fallen, who want Dresden in their number. And, he must avoid getting arrested by the police, because he was seen leaving the scene of a murder. While ultimately discovering what is truly in his heart. Why does he do what he does for mankind?
