Born in Chicago in 1950, Mercedes Lackey worked as an artist's model and as a computer programmer, and later was active in raptor rehabilitation. She got her start in sf/f as Marion Zimmer Bradley’s protégé, writing tales for MZB’s story collections. Best known as the creator of Valdemar and other universes, she is also the author of the Diana Tregarde novels, a forerunner of urban fantasy. In addition to her writing, Lackey has penned lyrics for and recorded nearly fifty songs for Firebird Arts & Music, a small recording company specializing in science fiction folk music (“filking”). In fact, when she’s writing, she will sometimes write a lyric to get to the heart of a difficult scene. Lackey lives with her husband, Larry Dixon, outside of Tulsa, in a wood-over-concrete octagonal house, and enjoys falconry, beading, costuming and needlework.
