I have been reading Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara serious since I was a young girl. I actually just starting re-reading them begining recently with my favorite book-The Sword of Shannara. They are well worth your time and when your done with the first trilogy you can keep right on reading with "The Heritage of Shannar" series.

First of all I have been reading fantasy novels for over 20 years, it is my favorite genre and I rarely read anything else. I was upset by all the negative remarks referring to Terry Brooks ripping off Tolkien. I could see some similaries, but honestly most fantasy novels are pretty formulaic, a magical token for the hero to attain, a great evil to banish before it destroys the world and only a small select group of characters who are able to fulfill the quest. Folks, this is why fantasy lovers love fantasy, I can think of nothing better than a good quest that includes a wizard and elf and a dwarf. I have read the entire Shannara series and am buying it for my 20 year old brother in law whose read mostly Tolkien and Salvatore. These are great books that I couldn't put down, I was sad when the series was over. This series is highly recommended, BUY IT!

I've been reading Terry Brooks since I was in high school, started in 10th grade, and have finished reading all the books in the Shannara series. I was sad to see it end. You grow attatched to the characters and feel what they're going through. Definitly worthy of a read if you love fantasy. I've read Tolkein as well, and although there are some aspects which are like LOTR, this is orginial Terry Brooks, and a lot of this I don't believe Tolkein could come up with simply because this is from T. Brook's mind and heart. I can't stand when people claim that he is a nobody and ripped off Tolkein, because in all honesty, a lot of fantasy is the same, but different by different authors.
Beautifully written, engaging, and heart pounding. I highly recommend this as a Shannara addict and entire series reader.

While I do agree that these books do have a lot of the same elements as LOTR and some things are blatant ripoffs, there is no reason to bash the man's character and talent. The guy has been writing for 30 years, can any of us on this "review board" say that.. These books are fun reads and if you accept them for what are then you'll be ok. 'Nuf said.
