Absinthe & Flamethrowers

Written for reasonable risk takers who want to add more excitement to their lives, this edgy combination of science, history and DIY projects explains why danger is good for you and details the fine art of living dangerously. Author William Gurstelle explains how to make gunpowder, fuses and a cannon to test your gunpowder’s strength; how to build a small rocket from scratch; and how to make a smoke bomb. In addition to the science of the alcoholic beverage known as absinthe, we learn why bullwhips crack, how to throw a knife with precision and—of course—how to build your own flamethrower.

Complete with step-by-step directions and illustrations, Absinthe & Flamethrowers brings science to life in a daring and original way. “If you can imagine Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes all grown up, this supercharged guide for amateur thrill-seekers would probably replace Hobbes as his constant companion.” —Publishers Weekly

too many ruminations

I'm a bit disappointed in this book. I was hoping for more DIY project ideas, but there is not much more than what the editorial review for the book reveals.

enjoyable information
September 24, 2009

This book is arranged by subject, so finding the information you want to read about is fairly easy. It is interesting, although my sons, (21 and 17), enjoyed this book way more than I did.
