Todd McCaffrey, heir to the bestselling science fiction universe created by his mother, Anne McCaffrey, continues the enthralling story of Dragonsblood, as a grave new challenge confronts the dragonriders and their magnificent Thread-killing beasts.
Thirteen-year-old Fiona, the only surviving daughter of Lord Bemin, is just about to assume the duties of a Weyrwoman—co-leader of an entire dragon collective—when much to her surprise she Impresses a queen dragon hatchling. The challenges of becoming a Weyrwoman can be overwhelming. But now a new contagion has spread to the dragons from their fire-lizard cousins, and Fiona faces the possibility of losing her queen to the sickness. Add to that threat the recent sightings of the blackdust that heralds the deadly Thread, and Fiona will have to grow up fast to help deal with the crisis.
As Weyrleader B’Nik and queen rider Lorana comb Fort Weyr’s Records in a desperate search for a solution to the Plague, the past itself may hold the key to saving Pern. Guided by a mysterious ally, and trusting in the dragon gift for transcending time, Fiona will join a risky expedition with far-reaching consequences for both Pern’s future and her personal destiny.

I liked the book. It continues the story of Pern which I have loved reading about over the years. I was disappointed that the book left us hanging so much. It is okay to leave us anticipating the continuation but this just seemed to quit in the middle of a story. I hope the author plans to continue the story but I hate to have to wait until it comes out.

Todd seems to be obsessed with plagues. This is a theme tha prevails in these turns. I feel that Todd could use some of his own work experiance to help overcome these problems after all AVAIS was not turned off when the settelers came north but went to sleep. Somthing in the oldest records may be found?

This one was slow and, IMO, totally unresolved. The only part of the plot with even partial resolution was the trip back in time, but even that seemed flat. What caused the dragon illness? Did they cure it? Was this banning the reason Pernese didn't have fire-lizards in the future? What happened to the budding relationship between Fiona and T'mar? Who flew Talenth? Who forewarned Fiona about the project? I was disappointed these questions didn't get answered. This one lacked the punch Todd's other books had. Maybe he was just leaving the door open for another book? I will read another, but unless it has a better closure, I guess I'm through buying the beloved Pern books I've been reading (and re-reading) for nearly 30 years.

After about 4 weeks of up picking this book up, reading as long as I could stand it, and then putting it down, I have only been able to force myself to read 140 pages, all the while waiting, waiting, waiting for something to make sense or something to happen.
All the weyrlings and their dragons are sleepy and muzzy-headed. The older dragons are sick and coughing and the fire lizards have been banished because it is thought they may be the source of infection to the dragons. Thread is getting ready to fall. There are pages and pages of disjointed dialogue, more complaints abut the sleepiness of the weyrlings and dragons, more disjointed dialogue. In the midst is Fiona, a Lord Holder's daughter who has managed to impress a golden queen dragon. She walks about worried that her dragon is sleeping too much and she can't remember things, all while nursing sick dragons and their riders. But after 140 pages of this disjointed book, I'm still waiting for a plot and wondering why in the world the author wasted 140 pages to say absolutely nothing.
Todd McCaffrey's last book was very well written - in fact, it was a page-turner, which is what I expected this one to be. I keep thinking that if I just read a few more pages, then it will finally pick up the pace and something will happen. I just don't know if I can make myself do it.

This was yet again another great book in the Dragonriders of Pern series. The transition from Anne to Todd is seamless and I look forward to many more stories. I have been reading Dragonriders since 1977 in High School and I always wonder why they have not made these great tales into a movie. I would love to really see the Dragons Fly!! I highly recommend this book to all the Pern followers.
