SFBC members know and love Carrie Vaughn for her bestselling Kitty Norville series—the first three books of which can be found in our exclusive omnibus, Long Time Listener, First Time Werewolf. Now Vaughn gives urban fantasy a unique new twist with Discord’s Apple—an apocalyptic adventure with a mythical slant.
When comic book writer Evie Walker goes home to spend time with her dying father, she discovers that his creaky old house in Hope’s Fort, Colorado, isn’t the only legacy she stands to inherit. Hidden behind the basement door is a secret, magical storeroom where wondrous treasures from myth and legend are kept safe until they are needed again. The room’s magic keeps out anyone who is not intended to use the items. But just because no one ever gets in doesn’t mean it can’t be done. And there are those who will give anything to try.
Evie must guard the storeroom against ancient and malicious forces, protecting the past and the future even as the present unravels around her. Old heroes and notorious villains alike will rise to fight on her side or to undermine her most desperate gambits. But who is friend, and who is foe, and who will help her stop the coming apocalypse?

I sat through two long and tedious college lit courses studying the Iliad, Odyssey, gods and goddesses, and all that rot, and never had the first clue what it was about--until I read this book. Then the author wove all that mythology, which I now get, into a future America setting and through in a few comic book stories for good measure. Somehow it all works, although keeping up with all the storylines got tiresome after the first 180 pages or so. This story is a little off the beaten path and loads of fun to read.

take a little from Gaimen's "American Gods", add Greek myths, a chaotic government and throw in the random fairy tail and this is what you end up with.

I have never read anything by this author but enjoyed the book. The premise of storeroom lends itself to many possiblities.

This book can be tough to get into at first, especially since it is so different from her Kitty books. It has many plot threads, and characters, that all have to be brought together. However, it does get going and has a unique story based on Greek mythology. A sequel is already slated for release.

I thought the book was great. I enjoyed the near-modern time frame with mythical beings mingling with humans. This was my first read from Vaughn and I will probably read more of her books.
