Sam Vimes, Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, is taking a holiday in the countryside. Now, it must be said, Vimes would much rather examine severed body parts and kosh miscreants on the head than spend a minute amid boring vegetation and snobbish gentry. However, the countryside in question belongs to his loving wife, Lady Sybil—thus to him—and this vacation was her idea.
Bored and restless, Vimes fervently hopes for a crime to call him back to the city—something only his skills can solve. And since a brace of oxen on steroids could not pull the copper out of Sam Vimes, he is delighted when a crime does occur—in his own backyard. It’s a murder that positively breaks his heart, for it is tied to an ancient crime more terrible than murder. And justice—if not a decent bacon sandwich—must be served.

Terry Pratchett has done it again. His tongue, firmly in cheek, satire of the world as we know it is alive and well. He blends a very good mystery with improbable characters and downright laugh out loud humor to tell a story of his beloved character Commander Samuel Vimes and his street smart instincts for finding the answers to the important questions of who did what and why. Along the way we meet characters both odd and yet somehow familiar to us all. Overall an excellent read from a truely great author.
