Terry Pratchett is back, and I Shall Wear Midnight, the 4th book in the Tiffany Aching series—and the 36th Discworld novel—shows him at his rollicking, satirical best.
It’s the end of summer, and the Chalk’s annual end-of-summer fair has brought people from miles around, out for a bit of drinking and flirting and good clean fun. As the only witch of the Chalk, 15-year-old Tiffany is on hand to help anyone who needs helping, since there are always accidents and the occasional dust-up with drunken louts. One such unfortunate incident sends her to the home of the Nac Mac Feegle—Tiffany’s ever-present allies, the 6-inch-high, rough-and-tumble Wee Free Men.
After a meal of mutton-and-snails, Tiffany receives a warning from the Feegle Queen: “Danger around ye!” Sure enough, the young witch starts to sense someone watching her. When an ailing baron she’s been tending finally dies, the locals’ healthy fear of witches suddenly turns ugly! Something foul is stirring up anti-witch sentiment—and it bears particular ill will toward Tiffany. With the witch-hatred spreading and the Feegles up in arms, the “big wee hag” will have to find a way to thwart the malice...before she ends up dead, or worse!

Crivens! The wee hag's not so wee anymore.
I couldn't put I Shall Wear Midnight down (as much as I hated to reach the end) this past weekend. Another Pratchett masterpiece with characters who feel as real as people you've known your whole life. And no matter how silly the situations that Tiffany finds herself drawn into may be, you can't help but find yourself empathizing with your new friends and maybe even learning a thing or two about human nature along the way.
All of the Tiffany Aching books are Terry at his best - whether they be children's books or not.

Tiffany Aching, The Wee Free Men, and EVIL! It's even got a bit of the Guard and more witches than you can shake a broomstick at. Highly recommended.
