A Burdensome Necessity
January 20, 2013

If "Crows" would have been the first book in the series, there would have never been a second book. It is not as well written as the first 3, and GRRM's personal strength of character-development just isn't as strong in this book. Too many characters only loosely tied to the saga thus far. If you are reading this series, it is a necessity to read this book before going on to "Dragons." But that is just an unfortunate reality. As much as I truly love the series, I really struggled to get through this book. Very much a disappointment relative to what we know the author is capable of.

On its own this is the weakest of the five books currently out, but after you read it and then read "Dance with Dragons", you see that the two books together compliment one another nicely. Martin deals with only half the characters in each book, unfortunately for "Feast for Crows", it's the half we don't really care about as much. With that said, this is still a great book. Martin continues the tradition started in "Game of Thrones" of great storytelling, wonderous locations, and interesting, complex, and compelling characters which really are the backbone of this saga. I understand people's frustration with the fact that each book, with the exception of the first, doesn't have a real conclusion to it. This can be frustrating. Yet the books are so enthralling, and Martin is able to pull such raw emotion from the reader, that it makes it a reading experience unlike any other. When I read other books now they pale in comparison to these, and that's true even for "Feast". There will be a conclusion once book seven comes out,at least I hope so, but untill then I'm just really enjoying this ride.

I think it's great!

If you're a fan of this series you can't say anything bad about this book unless you're just someone who loves to complain. It served the series as it was meant to.

Good but...

Mr. Martin is an excellent story teller. I love his stories, but after the "Dance with Dragons" book, I do not think I will buy another. His narrations are excellent, but his books do not have a beginning-middle-ending. He continues creating new characters, and I do not see, after 5 books, any ending in sight.

As far as the quality of the writing I have no complaints; speaking of the series in general, I was absolutely captivated from the get go. I don't read anything except SciFi, Fantasy and the kind of horror Stevn King writes so I always have high expectations. In this series' case, I was very much deflated by how Martin allowed what is by me perceived as 'evil' and 'injustice' to win over and over again, until in this last chapter - thin, lacking as it is, it seems there is nowhere left to go, unless John somehow avenges his father... and the rest of the family. I am looking forward to some kind of ending, or at least continuation, and I am definitely looking forward to get some satisfaction in regards to the various villains in this plot - and yes, I was very happy about the ones that did get theirs. Hopefully, the new HBO series will give Martin the push and inspiration he's been wanting.
