Naomi Novik, Thank You...I had been looking for more on the Dragon Myth/Icon and I hafta say, Simply Great!!! You have done magnificently, the way the personality and charecter of each dragon is and develops keeps me reading and turning the pages!!!Just can't get enough. For y'all who love the Dragon, this is one to savor!! Taking History and weaving it with such a storyline has me never wanting this series to end. the inside info mentions about three more books to be written, I hope that's just for 2012!! Please, don't end this, You have created one "Jewel" of a Tale, and it's one of the best I've read to date.
This whole series is on my "Read Again" bookcase. I'm waiting on "Crucible of Gold" and I'm already looking for the next title. Really, Thanks Very Much. You are ranked with the best authors of "Dragon Tales", Keep up your great work, they are destined to be the top of the Line.....Don't stop!!! Thanks again... Walter J.

The premise had great promise. The great European empires locked in war. Gallant warriors striving save the world from tyranny and oppression. It is an epic moment in history that would decide the direction of history. And there are dragons too!
Unfortunately the stories fall short of the promise. On the book jacket it is mentioned that the books were optioned for motion pictures and a typical Hollywood special effects laden script is how the books read. The stereotypical characters are only mildly interesting and lack any real motivation. Why are they fighting the French? Because they are French of course. The pacing of the stories is slow and dragging in parts that could be shortened. Sections that are more interesting and move the story forward are quickly skipped through. It would have saved much paper if ?Insert CGI special effects here.? were on the page instead of the tepid battles/fight sequences. The dragon, Temeriare?s preoccupation with ?Dragon?s Rights? in an era when women were considered little more than chattel seems a contrived attempt to add social commentary in order to increase the books? relevance and interest; failing to do either.
Usually movie adaptation novels are written after the script, but somehow things were reversed this time.

If you love dragons and want something a litte different than the usual medieval/wizard lore, these stories are for you. The characters are rich and get better with each new adventure. Each dragon has their own distinctive personality. Highly recommended!

I bought this book after I read the Harry Potter series. This is the best dragon story I have ever read. Started just reading this book on my lunch at work, was hooked from the very beginning, Temeraire and Laurence shared such great adventures, this is what I wish I could have read in my history class in Junior high. I have read all the books in the series and have book 5 on order, you won't be disappointed if you love dragons. Wish I could have a dragon like Temeraire. Naomi, please don't stop writing stories like these.
