VICKI MYRON
Vicki Myron books hold a special place in the hearts of both readers and cat lovers. When this children’s author became the new head librarian in her hometown of Spencer, Iowa, she faced a daunting challenge: to help uplift the spirits of a small, out-of-the-way town mired deep in the farm crisis of the 1980s. When Vicki found a tiny, bedraggled kitten in the library’s night drop box, she asked, and received, approval to adopt him as Spencer’s resident library cat. Dewey, as the townspeople named the kitten, became instantly popular with both the residents of Spencer and people from hundreds of miles away—so much so that, after Dewey’s death in 2006, Vicki was asked to write down her memories of the lovable orange cat. And so, the Dewey Readmore Books series was born. Since Vicki’s first children‘s book, the series has grown into a huge hit with the ever-growing legion of fans of this unlikely children’s author and her co-writer, Bret Witter. The growing roster of Vicki Myron books includes Dewey The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, Dewey's Nine Lives: The Legacy of the Small-Town Library Cat Who Inspired Millions, Dewey's Christmas at the Library, and Dewey: There's a Cat in the Library! The legacy of Dewey Readmore Books transcends the children’s book genre, though. This remarkable cat became a beacon of hope not just for Vicki Myron, but for the entire town of Spencer as it slowly, steadily pulled itself up from the worst financial crisis in its long history.
