S. M. Stirling
S. M. Stirling is a Canadian-American author of fantasy novels and science fiction books, born in Metz, France in 1953 to an English mother and a Canadian father. He has lived in several countries and moved to Canada as a teenager. He earned a law degree at Osgood Hall in Toronto, and worked numerous odd jobs before settling down to write full time in 1988.
Since the first of his fantasy novels was published in 1985, S. M. Stirling has established himself as an author adept at writing along the broad spectrum of science fiction books. With significant fantasy works in military science fiction and alternate history, Stirling creates vividly detailed and well-developed worlds, ranging from a post-apocalyptic barbarian culture that wields magic to a technologically advanced alternate universe in which different species of humans have been created through genetic engineering.
In addition to his versatility in genre and setting, S. M. Stirling books always feature well-developed characters, who, in addition to futuristic external conflicts, face internal battles relevant to life today. One of the masters of the battle scene, he has sometimes been criticized for being too graphically violent. While these realistic descriptions of violence, occasionally accompanied by equally realistic descriptions of sex, are intended for a mature audience, they are secondary to the characters and themes.
S. M. Stirling books include the Draka series of alternate history fantasy novels and the more recent Dies the Fire trilogy. A frequent collaborator, Stirling has written books with Holly Lisle, David Drake, Jerry Pournelle, Anne McCaffrey, Raymond E. Feist and James Doohan. He’s also written Babylon 5 and Terminator 2 media tie-ins.
