Mercedes Lackey
In just over two decades as one of the most popular fantasy authors, Valdemar and Diana Tregarde creator Mercedes Lackey has written over 100 books, and the magic shows no signs of slowing down. Born in Chicago in 1950, Lackey worked as an artist's model and as a computer programmer, and later was active in raptor rehabilitation. She got her start in science fiction and fantasy as a protégé of Marion Zimmer Bradley, writing tales for MZB’s story collections. Mercedes Lackey is best known as the creator of Valdemar, a series of interlocking stand-alone fantasy books and trilogies set in a breathtakingly complex world. She is also the author of the Diana Tregarde novels, a forerunner of urban fantasy books. In addition to her writing, Lackey has penned lyrics for and recorded nearly 50 songs for Firebird Arts & Music, a small recording company specializing in science fiction folk music. In fact, when she’s writing, she will sometimes write a lyric to get to the heart of a difficult scene. She has worked with such fantasy authors as Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey, Piers Anthony, James Mallory and Roberta Gellis. Mercedes Lackey lives with her husband, Larry Dixon, outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a wood-over-concrete octagonal house, and enjoys falconry, beading, costuming and needlework.
