2007 marked the 30th anniversary of the publication of Terry Brooks’ first novel, The Sword of Shannara, which ran on the New York Times bestseller list for more than six months. Considered the father of modern fantasy, Brooks has published more than 20 bestsellers since, including The Word and the Void, whose storyline converges with that of Shannara in The Genesis of Shannara trilogy. Born in Illinois in 1944, Brooks began writing stories in high school, but when he was given a copy of The Lord of the Rings, he discovered his touchstone and turned his full attention to crafting fantasy. A practicing lawyer until his third book was published, he now writes full time. Brooks lives in Seattle and Hawaii with his wife, Judine, and is working on a new Landover book, due out in 2009.
