Flight of the Nighthawks

by Raymond E. Feist

Hardcover

An uneasy peace has settled over Midkemia, but the powerful sorcerer Pug has been having nightmares that portend the land's utter destruction. And Pug's dreams really do come true. So he calls an emergency meeting of the Conclave of Shadows, a group of sorcerers dedicated to the protection of Midkemia. Meanwhile, in a tiny town on the other side of the world, Pug's son, Caleb, is attacked and left for dead by bandits. His lover's sons, Zane and Tad, save his life—and end up transported to the Sorcerer's Isle, where they receive two highly unusual apprenticeships. While Caleb rests and watches, the boys endure a grueling training program that reshapes them from lazy young roustabouts to capable fighters who can endure all manner of danger or slash it to ribbons with their swords. In this magical place, they learn to use their physical abilities to offset the fact that they have no magical powers. Those skills must keep them alive, because the enemy at hand is the deadly band of assassins known as the Nighthawks, an earlier scourge of the Kingdom of the Isles. Can these two young, unemployed farmhands—with not a drop of magical ability between them—work with the Conclave of Shadows to save Midkemia from annihilation? (347 pp.) 2006.

Raymond E. Feist

Raymond E. Feist

When Raymond Elias Feist was 9 years old, he received his first science fiction read—The Treasury of Great Science Fiction, a 2-volume set that came with his enrollment in…drum roll please…The Science Fiction Book Club. Little did he know that a late-night role-playing marathon with some pals would open the door to his becoming an author in the Club. The world of Midkemia started with the idea for an RPG, and though Feist didn’t actually coin the name, it would later make him famous. At the time, he was a poor college student, trying to write his first book. Now he’s the acclaimed author of several series, including the Riftwar Saga, the Serpentwar saga, Conclave of Shadows, the Darkwar Saga, and the forthcoming Demonwar Trilogy, all set in Midkemia. A Southern Californian, Feist is also a collector and connoisseur of fine wine.
