I was in the middle of another project, the Cleric Quintet, when I got the call from TSR. They wanted me to go back to Drizzt Do'Urden, the dark elf. The bookstores were calling for it--loudly. Furthermore, the bookstores wanted a hardcover, not just a paperback. So they called me, and wanted Drizzt. For me, of course, this was thrilling news. Finally I'd break into hardcover. The bad news, though, was that they needed the first book, The Legacy, in a hurry. I remember the editor at TSR asking me gingerly if I could deliver it in six weeks. Of course, like any good author, I feigned distress, but the truth of it was, I already had this story completely mapped out.
