Black Moon Inn

by Laurell K. Hamilton

Hardcover

Jacket art by Luis Royo Seems like everyone wants to get close to Anita Blake. Some want her protection. Some want to make love to her. A lot of others want a chunk of her hide. From the scars she wears, they've come close. It's all in an evening's work for Anita. She raises the dead for a living, helps the St. Louis police solve crimes involving the preternatural, carries a license to kill vampires (who call her The Executioner) and doesn't take lip--or fang--from anybody. In our first 3-in-1 collection, Club Vampyre... Anita confronts a 10-year-old girl who is also a 1,000-year-old vampire in Guilty Pleasures. And Jean-Claude, the world's sexiest dead man, slips into her life. Ethics make Anita turn down a fortune to raise a 300-year-old zombie in The Laughing Corpse. Then she has to deal with the voodoo priestess who takes the job. Before Anita can figure Jean-Claude out, she meets Richard, an idealistic alpha werewolf. When another vampire moves in, the fur really flies at the Circus of the Damned. The Midnight Cafe finds our heroine developing her powers, social life and libido. And she buys a new set of silver knives. While searching St. Louis for missing werewolves, Anita must keep her boyfriends from shredding each other at The Lunatic Cafe. The Missouri countryside isn't safe either. Bloody Bones finds Anita tracking down an ancient evil and raising a zombie from a huge pile of bones. There's a price on her head in The Killing Dance. And if Richard and Jean-Claude can stop bickering, they might be able to save her. Now, in Black Moon Inn, our petite necromancer is facing her two toughest challenges to date. One of them is the Vampire High Council. They've come to 'discipline' Jean-Claude. Burnt Offerings forces Anita to save the day...er, night. In Blue Moon, Anita has to come to terms with herself--her growing powers, her needs and the men in her life--and get Richard, a high school teacher, out of the slammer before school starts. Walk softly around this woman. Her Browning 9mm automatic is handy. And her silver knives are as sharp as Laurell K. Hamilton's writing. (613 pp.) more...

The Midnight Cafe (3-in-1)

by Laurell K. Hamilton

Hardcover

Jacket art by Luis Royo My name's Anita Blake, and I'm a preternatural expert--I raise the dead and kill vampires legally. In my business, you don't fall in love with a werewolf. It interferes with your work. Take, for instance, the case involving The Lunatic Cafe. A number of werewolves were missing and some of the local pack came to me for help. Maybe because I was dating their alpha male. I'd survived jealous vampires and killer zombies--but that love thing nearly killed me. Then there was the Bloody Bones job. It started when I was hired to raise the dead in an old Branson, Missouri, graveyard. Three teenagers turned up gruesomely slaughtered in the woods nearby, and I knew this was no ordinary vampire kill. I was up against something I'd never seen before, something old, long-dormant and even more powerful than my old friend, the master vampire Jean-Claude. Lately, word on the street is that I'm worth a half million dollars. Dead or alive. With killers on her trail, what's a girl to do but turn to the men in her life? But I'm beginning to wonder if two monsters are better than one. The Killing Dance I understand. Relationships I don't. Warning: Explicit sex, violence and language. (825 pp.) 1996-1997 more...

LAURELL K. HAMILTON

Laurell K. Hamilton: Ultimate Escapes

Laurell K. Hamilton's passion for fantasy took root early—and a bit tragically. When her mother died in a car accident, Hamilton was raised by her grandmother, whom Hamilton credits with sparking her interest in fantasy. The older woman told horror stories that Hamilton remembers to this day. Growing up in the Midwest, Hamilton's first encounter with fantasy fiction was entitled "Pigeon from Hell," and soon after, she discovered The Natural History of the Vampire in her school library.

Years later, childhood reading and those bedtime tales would dovetail with influences like Robert B. Parker's Spencer series and Robert E. Howard's Conan The Barbarian, to create Hamilton's popular series, Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter. Now, Hamilton has found new success with her exploration of an entirely different realm of fantasy.

In her latest works, it's not vampires but faerie who share the world with human beings. In the best-selling A Kiss of Shadows, Hamilton introduces Meredith, a lovely fey princess on the run from the faerie court. A Caress of Twilight finds Meredith working as a private investigator in L.A.—and in a furious race with cousin Prince Cel for the throne of the Unseelie Court. The first of the two to successfully procreate wins the crown. Meredith takes on a series of lovers with passion and zest, dodging assassination attempts, and even a serial killer who stalks the city's fey and human populations.

Hamilton likes to spice up her dark and magical plot lines with healthy doses of sex and violence. "Two things I do well in books are sex and violence," she says. "I want a kiss to be so believable that it gives the reader shivers." In a lesser author's hands, such tactics might seem gratuitous, but Hamilton's prose is grounded by her first person narrative and her research into mythology and folklore.

"I think people have a real need to believe in things invisible," says Hamilton. "I think that in times of stress, we often turn to escapism." With her latest series, Hamilton continues to provide readers the means to do just that.
